One of Britain’s most celebrated and historic motorcycling roads is threatened with closure due to a dispute over who should pay for repairs.
The Snake Pass, which weaves across the Derbyshire Peak District between Glossop and the Ladybower Reservoir, needs significant construction work due to landslides caused by recent heavy rain. Derbyshire County Council says using its road budget to fix the Pass would divert too much cash from other routes. It wants a £4m “landslip fund” from the Government to cover the reconstruction costs. The council highways director says a full closure is possible if the road cannot be made safe, and: “If there was a major landslip it would be beyond what we can do”. It will be temporarily closed from October 14-25 for further assessment.
